FORMING A DAILY PRAYER RULE

Prayer is “talking with God.” In His mercy, God hears our cries, for He is our Heavenly Father and the Lover of mankind.

Regular prayer on a daily basis is essential to our spiritual well-being, just as regular meals are necessary for our physical well-being.

When establishing your own personal prayer time, praying these prayers will provide a basic structure for your prayer life. They come from the Holy Tradition of the Church which Christ established and handed down to His Apostles.

Decide where and when you will pray your daily prayers. Morning and evening are important times to pray. Establish in your heart to pray at these times every day.

Prayer is not always easy. Yet when we are faithful, the Holy Spirit moves within us and begins to help us pray by praying within us.

While we pray, we make the sign of the Cross frequently. The Lord’s Cross is a sign of His victory over the devil, sin and death. When we make the sign of the Lord’s Cross on ourselves, we are showing that He is our own Lord. We call on His power and strength to defeat our spiritual enemy, the devil.

We make the sign of the Cross on ourselves by putting together the thumb, first finger and middle finger of our right hand. These three fingers placed together remind us that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We also hold our ring finger and little finger together and touch them to the palm of our hand. These two fingers held together remind us that two natures—the nature of God and the nature of man— are joined in Jesus Christ. By holding our right hand in this manner, we are confessing our belief in the Holy Trinity and in the Good News of Jesus Christ’s Incarnation—His birth in the flesh as a man for the sake of our salvation.

With our right hand held in this way, we touch our three fingers to our forehead, and say, “In the Name of the Father…” We touch our chest, saying, “and of the Son…” We touch our right shoulder, saying, “and of the Holy Spirit…” and our left shoulder, saying “Amen.” Each time the Name of the Holy Trinity is mentioned in our prayers, we make the sign of the Cross, or when we feel a special need to thank God or ask His protection, or whenever the Holy Spirit moves us to make it. A small cross sign by itself + indicates when the sign of the Cross is usually made during the services of prayer.

Although we can pray in any position, the usual way of praying, as demonstrated in the Church down through the ages, is standing. We pray standing out of respect for God, and so that our entire being—body, mind and soul—can offer itself to God. At times, we cross ourselves and make a low bow towards the ground, touching the floor with our right hand as a sign of our deep reverence and humble worship of the Lord. A small cross sign within parentheses (+) is used in this book to show when the sign of the Cross with a low bow is traditionally made during the services.

HYMN TO THE HOLY TRINITY

Having arisen from sleep, we fall down before You, O Blessed One, and sing to You the hymn of the angels: Holy, holy, holy are You, O God.

Heaven and earth are filled with Your glory. Through the prayers of the Theotokos, save us.

From my bed and sleep You have raised me, O Lord, give light to my mind and my heart, and open my lips that I may praise You, Most Holy Trinity: Holy, holy, holy are You, O God.

Through the prayers of the Theotokos, save us.

Without warning, the Judge will come, and the deeds of each one will be revealed, but with fear we cry out in the middle of the night: Holy, holy, holy are You, O God. Through the prayers of the Theotokos, save us.

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

THE NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only-begotten, Begotten of the Father before all worlds. Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from Heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried; And the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; And ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; Whose Kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father, + Who with the Father and Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets; And I believe in One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING FOR TODAY

PSALM 50 (51 KJV)

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my sin. Wash away all my evil and cleanse me from my sin, for I know my evil ways, and my sin is ever before me. I sinned only against You and did this evil before You, that You might be justified in Your words of judgment to me. I was conceived in sin, and in sins my mother gave birth to me. You love truth; the hidden and secret things of Your wisdom You have made clear to me. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop and I shall be made clean; You shall wash me and I shall be made whiter than snow. You shall make me to hear joy and gladness, the bones that have been humbled will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my evil. Create in me a clean heart, 0 God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your Presence, nor take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore the joy of Your salvation to me and guide me with Your Spirit. I shall teach sinners Your ways and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, 0 God of my salvation; I shall rejoice in Your righteousness. 0 Lord, You shall open my lips and my mouth shall declare Your praise. For if You had desired sacrifice, I would have given it; with wholeburnt offerings You shall not be pleased. A sacrifice to God is a broken

spirit; God will not despise a heart that is broken and humbled before Him. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. You shall be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness and whole-burnt offerings. Then they shall offer bullocks upon Your altar.

HYMN TO THE MOTHER OF GOD

(In the Greek language, the Holy Virgin Mary is referred to as “Theotokos, “which means “The Birthgiver of God, “or “God-bearer, “for she bore Jesus Christ our Lord Scripture declares she deserves honor. See Luke 1:26-55).

It is fitting and right to bless you, 0 Theotokos, who are ever blessed and all-blameless, and the Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, you who in virginity gave birth to God the Word and are truly Theotokos, we magnify you.
